Mbakwe to play Thursday?
The Minnesota AD so far has only said "no comment until all the facts are out". The GopherHole last night seemed to imply they would drag out the investigation til after the Purdue game but this morning are citing an unnamed source as saying that the AD is planning on suspending him. http://www.gopherhole.com/modules.php?name=News&file=article&sid=1277
Hmmm, our program is filled with ACL injuries and theirs is full of malcontents and criminals. I think I prefer our way of being at partial strength.

Sounds like he's out, but......
I know he’s their leading scorer and rebounder but this is still going to be a big challenge. We had trouble with their other bigs last year and this team is desperate. I think they are going right after JJ and try to get him in foul trouble. Hopefully, they won’t be successful but I kinda want to see Carroll and/or Marcuis out there for extended time in a pressure situation.

Not sure what is going to happen
I was checking the rivals boards and people are going in both directions. The latest from Minnesota’s board is he is playing b/c he did not have malicious intent with his fb message.
Glad to hear he's playing
We need to be beating teams when they’re at their best.
No suspensions. No injuries. No flunkouts. Give us all you got.
No asterisk victories.

While I agree from the perspective of a quality win for us...
I disagree whole-heartedly that this is the right thing for their program or university. Living in Minnesota, it’s interesting to hear the gripes about the tainted past of the program and how it hurts the university’s image, but still want Mbakwe to play.
Personally, I think it’s a mistake on the part of the U of M and Tubby. It sets a bad precedent for the rest of the team. A no contact order means no contact, good intentions or not. Tubby’s policy is obviously “I don’t care if you break the law, as long as you didn’t mean it or showed a lapse of judgement.” I don’t know why the U of M has repeatedly let the basketball teams get away with murder, and then later down the road play the victim and wonder what went wrong. he never would have been recruited by Painter in the first place, but if anyone on our team did anything like this, it would at least be a suspension until the criminal rulings were finalized. Look at LewJack last year. Painter doesn’t put up with crap, and I’m surprised that Tubby and the U are.
BTFU!
Don't get me wrong
I just want our kids to play the best competition available.
From the Gophers perspective, the fact that this kid can violate the law (ignoring a specific court order aimed directly at him) and continue to play is a humiliation for the school, the program and for Tubby himself.
The notion that these are young kids who don’t know any better is absolute bullshit. College students are adults and are legally responsible for their actions – unless, of course, the person in question has athletic ability that can be pimped to further the ambitions of the university.

Unfortunately I think this decision was competition over ethics
I don’t care if a Facebook message was of “good intent”. The guy was an absolute idiot. The law does not work that way, and I will be more than astonished if he doesn’t get in trouble with the courts for breaking his restraining order. Seriously? Facebook? Tubby and the AD realize that a suspension of their best player would be catastrophic to this team. Not just this year, but another year of mediocrity for Minnesota does terrible things to recruiting. Would Mbakwe be suspended under Matty? Of course. Unfortunately for other schools, competition reigns supreme.
It's an interesting point of discussion...
Maybe it’s a good parallel, maybe it’s not, but there are other schools/programs out there that run a tight ship too.
Case in point is the University of Minnesota-Duluth. They just won the D-II national football championship, and have both men’s and women’s hockey ranked in the top 5 nationally D-I. Bob Neilson is the football coach and AD, and was named the D-II National Coach of the Year. He’s done an impressive job in both roles, and is an outstanding member of the community as well. UMD has many academic all-american athletes, and a high graduation rate (not that unusual for a D-II school though).
What makes this relevant to this discussion is that 2 of his star football players were suspected of underage drinking and possession of marijuana, and he suspended them for their biggest regular season game until it got sorted out. There have been other small instances of off the field issues, both in football and other sports (LB on the football team was stripped of his captainship for public intoxication), but he’s set the precedent that this sort of behavior will not be tolerated.
The people here in Duluth take great pride in the on and off the field performance of UMD, and we kind of scratch our heads about what the U of M allows in their programs.
BTFU!
Oh and forgot to mention
Their star all-american running back was sidelined the entire year this year… with a torn ACL.
BTFU!
I agreed with your point before I actually read the offending FaceBook message
This is the actual facebook message that is the center of the new controversy. It was released in the police report in the URL below:
“I know we haven’t talked in forever and trust me I’m not trying to start any drama with nobody in your life or anything. I just wanted to wish u the best with everything and I hope all has been well with you and your family. I am still disappointed how everything played out and I do wish that in the future we could be cool again. Idk how u r going to take this msg hopefully its not bad but I just wanted to wish u a happy new year and send out a congrats for graduating. I’ve been well I’m finally playin bball again in everything down in miami finally got taken care of thank god. Well idk if u will respond or not but best wishes for 2011.’’

That message may have violated a restraining order according to the letter of the law, but it looks like a kid just making a dumb mistake. Not so sure he deserves a suspension for it, considering the actual nature of the message.
Hansons
This is where I had hoped to have one of the Hanson Bros. see more playing time in the non-conf schedule and be capable of starting when we need them. I don’t think we match up as well against Minny, OSU without more of an inside presence.
I guess we’ll see what we get
Hoosier by birth, Boilermaker by the grace of God
It was an incredibly dumb mistake, but apparently he thought the restraining order was over with the new year.
And as you can see above, there was absolutely nothing malicious about the message. He was dumb, but I think Minnesota made the right decision.
