Purdue Basketball Releases Non-Conference Schedule
Not too many surprises here, but it's nice to finally see the full non-conference schedule for the 2010-2011 season.
At first glance, I'd like to see a little more competition to prepare for the grueling Big Ten season. Luckily, with the talent and leadership this year's squad , I am not too worried about a lack of preparation.
Nov. 14 vs. Howard
Nov. 17vs. Alcorn State
Nov. 21 vs. Oakland
Nov. 23vs. Austin Peay
Nov. 26 vs. Southern Illinois (at Chicago)
Nov. 27 TBA (at Chicago)
Dec. 1 at Virginia Tech
Dec. 4 vs. Alabama
Dec. 7 at Valparaiso
Dec. 11 vs. North Florida
Dec. 18vs. Indiana State (at Conseco Fieldhouse)
Dec. 21vs. IPFW
Jan. 16 at West Virginia
Purdue is counting on a solid Big Ten season to make the case for the #1 seed. The strength of the Big Ten this year should compensate for any non conference schedule strength deficiencies. I could potentially seeing Purdue's PRI being an issue until inter-league play; however, it should all come out in the wash come March.
We'll elaborate on Purdue's schedule in greater details once we have a chance to digest it fully.

Wow, we are going to be seriously unprepared for the game in Blacksburg.
They had better be prepared. If they lose after I fly down there, I will not be amused.
Two tough road games
I think the non-conference schedule is fine. The Big Ten schedule is brutal.
A futile crusade to prevent mass ignorance

Not to be critical
but I want an explanation for the two tough road games. I only see one tough road game in West Virginia. I’m guessing you’re referring to Va Tech, but I don’t see how a team that consistently fails to make the NCAA tournament qualifies as a tough road game when we’re one of the elite programs in the nation. If you could make the case for it, I’d love to hear it though.
They'll be a tournament team this year.
And it’s not like they’ve been bad. One of the first teams out each of the last two years. Any road game against a team like that is tough. Cassell is not an easy place to play.
We should have a good record out of conference
I knew our out of conference schedule was weak, but I guess I didn’t realize how weak it was until I looked at this. Didn’t help that we couldn’t get a premiere matchup in the Big Ten-ACC tournament. Virginia Tech is a semi-decent opponent, but a win over them wouldn’t generate a lot of excitement for me. Anything but an undefeated out of conference schedule would be disappointing this year and any other loss besides West Virginia would hurt our RPI. Only West Virginia will be ranked out of all of these opponents. Oh well, I do think we have a well coached and strong team and a difficult in conference schedule to make up for it, but it would have been nice to play at least more than one ranked opponent outside of the conference and get a higher RPI.
Thanks for increasing my understanding
Studying up on it more, I probably have underestimated Virginia Tech based on past seasons. I haven’t followed them too closely. Reading up on them briefly, they do look like they will be better than I thought. I probably should have studied them more before i posted and made myself look dumb. I will continue to do my homework and study them before December 1. I definitely hope they are ranked when we play. I still expect a solid victory against them, but it won’t be as easy as my though. My expectations for this year’s team are high, so I will be disappointed with any out of conference loss, but I feel better about the schedule knowing that at least two of our opponents are ranked. I was trying to find Virginia Tech’s schedule for next year, but could only find last year’s posted on various sites. Does anyone know if Virginia Tech play anybody tough before they play us?

I meant to say but it won’t be easy as I first thought. Guess that’s what I get for trying to write a long post.
Oakland...
…is a glutton for punishment looking at last year’s schedule…Syracuse, Wisconsin, Kansas, Mich St, Memphis…now taking us on. They rocked their conference though, so I guess it worked.
I do wish our tournament was little more stacked…it was nice to face Tennessee last year and Oklahoma the year before. We’ll play plenty of good teams by NCAA tournament time which is all that matters.
Oakland likes money
A school such as Oakland is getting paid to play the likes of Purdue, Syracuse, Wisconsin, Kansas, Mich St, Memphis. They cant live off of what they make for selling tickets and sponsorship like the big boys.
They get paid $100,000 or more to play these BCS schools.
6-2, 185
schedule is fine w/ me
We get to beat up on WVU again, Alabama should be fun to torture in Mackey, and Virginia Tech is a team that many people think has all the pieces to be a top-10, even top-5 type team. They brought in some real athletic guys to play with what might be the most lethal scoring guard in the country. E-T Moore will eat his heart out, though. I can’t wait for November 14th like I can’t wait for September!
