Not ok to root for Butler
It took some time for me to figure out why it was not ok for Purdue fans to root for Butler. Then it hit me, we compete with them for recruits, its unfortunate but true. Gordon Hayward had a Purdue scholly and Matty couldn't find a scholly for Matt Howard. These are 2 players we should have on the squad today. In the future recruiting against Butler would probably been more difficult if they won a title. That said ten years from now, no one will remember who won this years title, and anonymous Duke title will not be remembered or have little impact on nationwide recruiting, but a Butler title would've. With Crean getting his thing back together down there, Pitino constantly poaching Indiana, the last thing we need is another option for the top recruits. Thank god Duke won....

Crean getting his thing together?
I was unaware of this. did he find a cache of uncommitted big men?
A futile crusade to prevent mass ignorance

Precisely why a Purdue fan shouldn’t have been rooting for Butler. Wow that took a whole 2.5 days. Butler needs to be beat down into submission. That’s why Matty SHOULD put them on the schedule every year, so at least we can hang the L on them they deserve. They cannot out Purdue Purdue. But if they start landing Zellers and other 4-5 stars maybe they can. As insufferable as Duke is, Butler championship would be MUCH worse for the program.

Why Don't We Play Butler?
I confess I rooted for Butler vs Duke.
Butler had an amazing run considering their best Regular season win was a home victory over Xavier (OSU without Evan Turn = Minnesota).
Purdue’s only hope for “greatness” is to lock down the state of Indiana (at least at the level below “one and done” players).
Here’s to hoping Hayward gets some good NBA feedback soon… and leaves early.
Why we dont play Butler....
There are a few reasons we don’t play Butler and they are the same reason that Butler doesn’t generally play many major conference team games.
First, Butler asks for a home and home series. They will come to your place, but you have to return the favor and come to theirs. A lot of schools are unwilling to travel to Butler to play. It is just too big of a risk to travel to Butler and have that loss on their resume for the tournament.
Their is no real upside for Purdue to play Butler. If Purdue wins then they won because they are a major conference school beating down on a non BCS school. If they lose its a mark on the tournament resume. It is all upside for Butler and all downside for Purdue either way.
Most schools will only take a non-BCS conference game by paying the other team to travel to their place and not return to the opposing team’s home court. Duke is the number one example of this. They rarely play any non-conference road games other than the ACC/ Big Ten challenge. Most of their non-home games before conference play starts are neutral site games. Interestingly enough their is a Duke/ Butler rematch in the works for next season, but Duke is only willing to agree to it if it takes place in a neutral location, most likely New York City.
Butler has rarely got big conference schools to come in for home and homes as talked about above. Ohio State did a home and home as a favor by Thad Motta to his former employer. Xavier was the same deal, the contract was written during the Thad Motta Xavier era. Currently on the slate for the next 2 years is a home and home with Stanford for Butler, which is a major score for Butler.

Arrogance? Maybe.
It might be arrogant, but I’m pretty sure with better players (check), a better coach (check) and the a silimiar system (check) we could beat them in WL, Hinkle or the moon on any given year. It might be low reward resume-wise but asserting in state dominance is invaluable in recruiting.
