is it possible?

for a weak conference like the big ten can sneak 3 teams in the elite 8?? haha lets go OSU represent!

by BoilerUP2256 on Mar 26, 2010 7:05 PM EDT reply actions

Either way

We’re going to have at least 2 wins over Elite 8 teams this year, possibly four (if MSU wins and we go tot he Final Four, thus getting a fourth there)

Not gonna lie

Things got a little dusty in casa de dbaltman while I watched that clip.

A word of advice, if you want to feel better about the game (or anything you are every doing really), have the theme from Hoosiers running through your head. It makes everything about 8 1/2 times more exciting.

by dbaltman on Mar 26, 2010 7:18 PM EDT reply actions

Amen to that

The game advice from Norman Dale is true for Purdue tonight too.

Actually, I want to avoid this thread for a few hours.

(Long explanation below)

Baylor and St. Mary’s fans have their own compelling stories—perhaps compelling enough to avoid OUR game, win or lose. Just, I want to be dialed in 100% for the game.

This team’s surprised me—I was disappointed after the Northwestern loss and saw things for them to fix. They went ahead and did it—much tougher. I had confidence they would. After Hummel’s injury? A little less. But they did it anyway. Last year, I had confidence Purdue would lose from the rough lessons of a taller stronger (Thabeet) UConn team. Tonight, against a big front line, they will show what they’ve learned.

Now about me—I have a ritual of planning to do something unusual I’d put off in case Purdue loses a big game—though I cheat and go ahead if they win too. Maybe it’ll be on hold for a bit if I’m emotionally buzzing. When I get around to it, I want to worry about irrelevant stuff that might go wrong, or what other people (even the President) might say, as much as this team did in the first two games—and, of course, tonight and possibly beyond.

This may be a self-centered look, but it’s a thrill to me that a bunch of people I never met and probably never will can add something intangible to my life. I guess it could be any team. But I think a fan has a right to feel his team does the intangibles best, win or lose, and I’d rather be watching them than anything on television.

That includes the previous games. You see, Purdue didn’t lose enough this year for me to go with my usual ritual, so I’ll be slipping something in in the next three hours. I’ll be ready.

This isn’t the usual sort of post on a game thread, but I appreciate seeing what everyone has to say on the games I’m able to watch and the ones where I have just the box score and want more. It’s helped make the experience be more than just this.

Living in enemy territory...

Duke fans don’t think we have a shot – they are worried about both Baylor and St. Mary’s for the next round. That’s exactly how we like it!

Quite a few

abominable calls already in the OSU-UT game. “Hey guys, let’s put David Lighty and Scotty Hopson on the bench 5 minutes into the first half!” This game may take 3 hours.

Definitely some ridiculous calls but

Buckeyes struggling with an SEC team. What else is new? The reason I hate Ohio State is because their football team does so well in the Big Ten and then whenever they have a big out of conference game they embarass our conference.

No shame in that

My clothing ritual is actually a non-ritual. My sister and her husband bought me a Purdue shirt which I wore for the first time on the day Purdue lost their first game of the year in Madison. Since then, I wear no Boilermaker clothes on game day.

by septimusharding on Mar 26, 2010 7:36 PM EDT up reply actions

Might be able to top that

The wife and I were at a sports bar for the A&M Game. When the lead got stretched to 11 in the 2nd half. I gave her my Purdue rugby jersey and made her give me the Glenn Robinson one she was wearing (easy fellas, she had a shirt underneath).

Needless to say, I think that was the deciding factor in the game.

by dbaltman on Mar 26, 2010 7:36 PM EDT up reply actions

Here are my jersey choices:

1. The stitched E’Twaun jersey (current style) black
2. Old style screenprint Kramer jersey (originally Brett Buscher)
3. Black #24Kory Sheets/Jason Werner football
4. Black #9 football (Marve/Pender/Bryant/Stu)
5. Black #33 football (Jaycen Taylor)
6. Gold #9 football (Stu, black numerals)

Interesting observation

Our venue is the only regional venue in a football stadium with the court on the 50 yard line. At Syracuse and St. Louis it is in the classic end zone configuration. That makes for a wider venue for us.

adjusted defensive efficiency of 93.9 going into the tournament. Among major conference teams in the tourney, only Vandy, Oklahoma St., Florida, Louisville, and Notre Dame were worse. So I guess that even if defense doesn’t win championships, it does at least win first round tourney games.

by boilerg on Mar 26, 2010 8:33 PM EDT up reply actions

It really would be a cinderella story if Moore has a breakout game.

“Everyone had written of an injured Purdue team. Their top scorer was suffering from nerves and was proving a liability, but through the grit of their Senior defensive captain, Purdue pulled through, besting every expert opinion.

Then, facing a virtual goliath in ESPN favorite Duke, Purdue needed to fire on all cylinders. What they needed was a miracle… And thats where Moore found his balls once again! Shooting 54% from the field and going 4-7 from 3PT range, Moore led all scorers with 32 points and 6 assists. While JJ contributed 21 and Kramer a dozen, it was the superior defense of the Boilers that was the real story of the game. Purdue forced 17 turnovers, and had 7 blocks (4 by Kramer and 2 by JJ) to turn up the heat on Duke.

With all the Frustration, Duke finally succumed to the pressure of expectations and Kramers foot up Singler’s ass and fell to the oft disrespected Boilers 81-69. With this dominating performance, Is a Final Four still out of the Question? If you ask ESPN yes, if you ask the Boilers…. HELL NO!!!"

Love the sentiment, but

81 points? Are we playing 3 halves?

by dbaltman on Mar 26, 2010 8:44 PM EDT up reply actions

Lol, I said it was a Cinderella Story.

Under that Scenario

32 – Moore
21 – JJ
12 – Kramer
  7 – Jackson
  6 – Grant
  3 – Smith
  1 – Bade

by Jamkel on Mar 26, 2010 8:47 PM EDT up reply actions

The good news is that...

You can’t just double up JJ or Moore now, Kramer will eat your lunch and you have to worry about Byrd or Smith from outside. I think they will respect those guys a little more and that might free up Moore a little bit to have a good game. Purdue is gaining some shooting confidence.

LMAO!!!! You've got to be kidding me.

Everyone is talking about Duke having to face Baylor. All ESPN has done the whole week is say, "Purdue got by on easy games against Siena and A&M, but now they just aren’t a good enough team ever to get by Duke. Duke just plays too good of defense for Purdue to have any chance. Duke will score at will against Purdue’s soft D, and so there is basically nothing Purdue can do to win. We should just call the South Region over and give it to Duke as everyone loves them.

I got into a couple of arguments with some sports writers before the B10 tourney...

About how Purdue hasn’t been getting any kind of respect from any national sports writer this year, and he could only ever say, “We’ll just have to agree to disagree. I feel Purdue got tons of respect, and probably more than they deserved, especially with how they played against MSU.”

by 7_Painter's_First_Fan on Mar 26, 2010 9:43 PM EDT up reply actions

I know!

I said that I followed Purdue the whole year, and even when Purdue was on a roll and beating top 10 teams, the only stories written were just short game recaps. Then for every game Duke/Cuse/Nova/KU/UK played, there were like 3 stories glorifying them, and I linked the stories to him and said, “How is this respect?!?!” Then I argued about Dukes RPI being inflated, and he just shut down.

by Jamkel on Mar 26, 2010 9:49 PM EDT up reply actions

wow

cant believe somebody would say we get too much respect. we’ve only beat two elite 8 teams out of conference. Oh well, if they want to judge us based on our worst game of the year, then whatever. if we win tonight, i dont care who doesnt respect us.

Fake overconfidence and conspiracy theory time

Because I’m ready to go.

Time to show em the bracket wasn’t made slightly easy for Duke.

It was made easy for Purdue.

See, Baylor’s super overconfident now—they may try to resist it, but they are. Plus their players probably vowed they’d play D on Martin and Hummel if they met Purdue again, and well, they’ll be confused once neither is on the court.

Duke, well, I’m not sure why they’re weak, but hopefully I’ll have an answer in two hours that should’ve been obvious.

Plus, conspiracy theorists know that misdirection is part of any conspiracy. Everyone’s hatin’ on Duke. Nobody’s paying attention to Purdue.

No need for nerves, everyone. We got this.

Good morning. In less than an hour, men from Indiana will join others from around the States. And they will be launching the largest aerial battle in the history of boilermakers. “Boilermaker.” That word should have new meaning for all of us today. We can’t be consumed by our petty differences anymore. We will be united in our common interests. Perhaps it’s fate that today is the 26th of March, and you will once again be fighting for our freedom… Not from tyranny, oppression, or persecution… but from annihilation. We are fighting for our right to live. To exist. And should we win the day, the 26th of March will no longer be known as a Purdue Holiday, but as the day the world declared in one voice: “We will not go quietly into the night!” We will not vanish without a fight! We’re going to live on! We’re going to survive! Today we celebrate our Independence Day!

The only way duke is gonna win this is from beyond the 3 point line

We are playing too stingy around the basket for them to get easy lay ups. Now all we have to do is stop giving up the easy 3. That and make some mofing layups.

This team played the ugliest basketball I’ve ever seen in the tournament and made it work really well. They hung with a very good team for most of the way and exceeded the post-Hummel expectations. Painter is a great coach and this team is going to be great next year.

VegasBaby

If you’re not a Purdue fan, what are you doing in here? This is not a gambling board.

by Mattdsm on Mar 27, 2010 12:05 AM EDT reply actions

I know you're hurting but...

…so am I. Objectively tho, you could see this if not a homer. I WANTED to believe but I’d lose mega $ thinking with my heart. I had season tix for the Big Dog era and saw Painter play (with heart) every game. Matt Waddell, Austin and some big ugly white, Irish guy. I’m easily as big a fan as anyone – but that doesn’t change what is true. RH added a lot to this team but don’t negate his 6-8 size and rebounding ability.

by VegasBaby on Mar 27, 2010 12:12 AM EDT up reply actions

btw

I didn’t bet against this team. Somehow, that’s just wong.

THANK YOU ALL GUYS!

Thanks for the awesome coverage TMill.
Thanks Kramer for your play all year – you will be so sorely missed, it’s not even funny.
Thanks Grant for all those 3-balls, for your great D, and your record breaking wins.
Thanks Wohlford for being ever the team guy.
Thanks JJ and Moore for coming back next year. :)
Thanks everyone else for allowing us to see you next year.
Thanks Baylor for destroying Duke 100-70 next game.

Is it wrong that I am crying right now?

Should I care that we don’t see Kramer, Grant, and Wohlford any more?

Thanks, everyone here, for being a support group of sorts

Through the (mostly) good and the bad.

The team’ll come back stronger and so will H&R Nation.

Gonna have a lot of non-tv-watching time this weekend. Things to do. I knew I’d be satisfied with the team at the end—just wanted to wait to be satisfied.

Duke hit every big shot of the second half

Most of them were shots where we could literally do no more. That is why they are Duke. they don’t get their whole reputation handed to them.

Yup

that’s right. We got some tough breaks, no doubt, but they took the ball to the hoop and hit their free throws late. We didn’t hit enough shots.

by septimusharding on Mar 27, 2010 12:10 AM EDT up reply actions

The most painful thing about this

is knowing that I have to wait 8 months to see our team again. Sone of a bitch.

I have a whole host of wishes for next year but..

the biggest for me is that we crush Minnesota so bad it rips open a hole in the universe and Wisconsin is sucked in there too. And of course #1 and NC.

by B0r0din on Mar 27, 2010 12:09 AM EDT reply actions

i second all of those

at a minimum, the Barn catches fire when the Boilers torch the nets

Lord, jager me strength.

Would love to see some big road wins

By margin. The last minute ones were exciting but this team can really make a statement with the experience they have and the work they’ll put in over the summer.

Let me add to my wish list real quick.

I think it's because

If you’re like me and away from WL and your college friends, you understand what a great place this is.

The chance to hang out with other fans and bs with each other is something you miss.

And Travis does an amazing job with keeping tabs on recruits/lesser followed sports/inside stories, etc. This is a great blog run by a passionate individual and it deserves a heck of a lot more praise.

The official last word for tonight

I don’t think we need a forced wrap tonight, or early tomorrow. I am likely headed to the Indiana state finals in the morning, so expect something some time tomorrow.

I am officially saying it now:

We win the whole damn thing next year. It is up to everyone else to stop us.

At least we got further than Kansas and most of the Big East. Technically we lasted long than Evan Turner University.

Your final stat-tracker update of the season:

The Big Two came to play tonight:

JJ – 23 pts, 5 rbds, 2 stls
3-dub – 18 pts, 4 rbds, 2 stls

Only three other players scored a point for our Boilers tonight (Grant, 6, Byrd 5, Barlow 5). CK3 was held scoreless in his final game as a Boilermaker.

Tough, tough line for Kramer tonight: 4 rbds, 1 ast, 1 stl (0-5 FG)

Looking at the other side, Duke’s big three (lower case, intentionally) came to play also:

Singler: 24 pts, 8 rbds
Smith: 15 pts, 5 rbds, 4 ast
Scheyer: 18 pts, 5 rbds, 4 ast

by Froggr on Mar 27, 2010 12:41 AM EDT reply actions

JJ played well.

He kept us in it, but I’m sorry, 5 rebounds is simply not enough.

by rcpratt on Mar 27, 2010 12:43 AM EDT up reply actions

Yeah

I think that’s the stat of the game. Our leading rebounder………………with 5 boards. That’s not going to get it down unless everyone else on the roster has 4.

by septimusharding on Mar 27, 2010 12:44 AM EDT up reply actions

Your Froggr Key Stat of the game:

Rebounds. What else

Duke – 45
Purdue – 22

by Froggr on Mar 27, 2010 12:44 AM EDT up reply actions

Yup. and no TOs in the second half.

Mostly comes down to height. And hands around the rim. Barlow went after it several times, I liked that.

by B0r0din on Mar 27, 2010 12:46 AM EDT up reply actions

Seconded.
