Big Ten Tournament: Day 1 Open Thread

You know, we're still the defending champion in this thing until someone takes it from our cold, dead hands. I'm live at Conseco this afternoon for the three opening round games. Feel free to keep me company in the comments during Iowa vs. Michigan, Indiana vs. Northwestern, and Minnesota vs. Penn State.

And so it begins

I was nearly run over by Todd and John Lickliter as I was making my way off the playing floor. Also, I am not so sure wearing the official T-shirt of Hammer & rails on Day 1 was a good idea. I officially feel underdressed.

On an unrelated note, Cuse’s Onuaku just had a pretty serious sounding knee injury. It’s like us and them are forever linked after that Defend That Digger.

Syracuse

They lost 2 games at the end of the season- that is reason enough for the committee to give the #1 seed to someone else. Though, with the bias towards the BE, I am sure they will still get it even with a player down. They are som much more talented than Purdue could ever be!!

WVU is undeserving. If we win out, we should get the #1!

Dare I say it

Double Byes are overrated, big East.

Torn

I want all four double bye teams to lose, but want to see the value of the WVU win go even higher

by ElijahJones22 on Mar 11, 2010 8:00 PM EST up reply actions

well they just wanted to rest up for the tourney

since they’re from everybody’s favorite conference they know losing early will be attributed to the greatness of the Big East and it won’t hurt their seeding.

by boilerg on Mar 11, 2010 8:02 PM EST up reply actions

I'm afraid of WVU passing us

solely based on the no Robbie factor, so I say let them all crash. unfortunately, it also improves the chances of 8 BE teams in the tourney

I'd be ticked if

West Virginia wins their conference tournament, we win our conference tournament and WV gets the 1 seed.

by boilerg on Mar 11, 2010 8:04 PM EST up reply actions

Unfortunately, I think that's pretty much a foregone conclusion now

Especially since ND decided they needed to play defense their last 5 games

by Justinian IV on Mar 11, 2010 8:04 PM EST up reply actions

Any chance of Purdue-ND in round 2

Now wouldn’t that be fun?

I kind of doubt it

I think ND has probably worked themselves up to an 8-9 seed with their end of season run (as much as I hate that), especially with all of the other bubbles teams deciding they didn’t need to play the last two weeks of the season

by Justinian IV on Mar 11, 2010 8:10 PM EST up reply actions

8-9 would be perfect

As we’re a definite 1 seed right? Right?

by dbaltman on Mar 11, 2010 8:23 PM EST up reply actions

I was thinking if they were in the 7-10 game

I don’t know about a 1 for us

Yeah

I know a 1 is probably out of the question. I just like to be a pain in the ass sometimes.

by dbaltman on Mar 11, 2010 8:27 PM EST up reply actions

In the ideal scenario

West Virginia wins tonight, just so the committee has no reason to include Cincinnati in the tournament, then loses tomorrow night in the semis so there is no reason for them to pass us in seeding

This is a terrible performance by Penn State

At least Iowa and Michigan acted like they were interested.

I'm not surprised...

The team plays like schizophrenics. They somehow liked to shoot against us (NU), but can’t find the basket other times to save their lives.

I think Penn State is done...

I feel like all of the Big Ten teams below Wisconsin are entirely bipolar.

Sometimes they look great, even against the good teams, but other times they completely suck against the average teams. Michigan beats Minnesota by 30, Minnesota will beat PSU by 20-whatever…weird season.

by rcpratt on Mar 11, 2010 8:50 PM EST up reply actions

Minnesota lost to Indiana.

With all of those big men, they lost to Indiana. That’s just absurd.

I still feel we are much better than we played tonight. The boys didn’t have any kind of intensity.

Penn State

No wonder it took you so long to get your first Big Ten win. The past few weeks you have played spoiler. Now you look like rotten eggs.

Big East

ND is up 4 w/16 seconds left. Pitt had 2 chance to tie their last time down the court but couldn’t convert.

by dbaltman on Mar 11, 2010 9:00 PM EST reply actions

that's 3 double bye teams that lost

Guess they enjoyed the rest so much, they wanted more

by boilerg on Mar 11, 2010 9:06 PM EST reply actions

Didn't you hear...

It’s good that they lost early, because it gives them extra rest for the NCAA tournament! (per the WWL)

by Justinian IV on Mar 11, 2010 9:07 PM EST up reply actions

of course

I’m sure that’s the same exact thing they would say if a high seed Big Ten team lost

by boilerg on Mar 11, 2010 9:09 PM EST up reply actions

The announcers agree

Every time they mention us vs Northwestern they pretty much say that we’ll lose.

“Northwestern has had success against Purdue this year”. Yea…that one time. You know, since we haven’t played them again.

unfortunately

it’s possible since our win over them will be dismissed since Hummel got injured and anything to help the Big East out will be done. But I think the 1 seeds are going to be Syracuse, Kentucky, Kansas and Duke. It’d make me mad if a team we crushed gets a 1 seed, but itd drive me crazy if we win the Big 10 tourney and WV still gets it over us.

by boilerg on Mar 11, 2010 9:33 PM EST up reply actions

i agree

we should, I just don’t have enough faith in the committee to do it.

by boilerg on Mar 11, 2010 9:48 PM EST up reply actions

Boilers need to take care of business

in our own tournament. The seeds will work out in the end.

by BoilerUp89 on Mar 11, 2010 9:49 PM EST up reply actions

True

we have to do well in the B10 tourney to have a legit claim at a top seed and if we win tomorrow we should have a 2 seed which ain’t bad. When I was at Purdue I only dreamed of being a top 3 seed.

by boilerg on Mar 11, 2010 9:59 PM EST up reply actions

Bring It !

I am glad we have an opportunity to payback NU this year. As well- they beat us with Hummel playing- so beating them without him- may seal the deal.

BTW- Your blog is one of the best around. Seriously. You have talent. I have a blog- but it isn’t sports related. Check it out if you want, I put you on my blog roll.

Keep it up- and more importantly … BOILER UP !!!!!
