Let's celebrate with a win: Illinois at Purdue GameThread

Illinois Fighting Illini at Purdue Boilermakers, Feb 20, 2010 4:00 PM EST

One year ago today Hammer & Rails went live. 517 members later it is going about 10 times strong than I could have ever expected. I thank everyone who has stopped by over the past year. You have helped make this one of the best Big Ten communities out there, and you have helped me achieve some of my dreams through this site. I know it is silly, but it really means a lot to me that this thing has come so far that it is getting national attention (even when I don't attack Syracuse).

So let's celebrate today with a win. I have a crazy busy day today, so I don't know how much I'll be able to comment during the OpenThread. Currently, I am LiveBlogging the Butler-Siena game for Rush the Court. Tonight I am covering the Danville North Central game as Travis Carroll's undefeated Warriors (ranked #1 in Indiana class 3A) visit Terone Johnson's Panthers (ranked #2 in Indiana Class 4A). This is all part of a basketball orgy, as I had the joy of covering my beloved Wildkats last night when they clinched their first conference title in seven years. Between games I have a lot of errands to run, but I am hoping to be home for at least the second half. Until then, you kids are running the show.

I'll bring beer.

not sure if anyone saw this

but on gameday, Digger Phelps talked about how impressed he is with Purdue, and praised them effusively for blowing out a top Big East team in West Virginia.

he started the sentence with “I’ve been impressed with Purdue ever since…” and I was hoping he’d finish it with “I read Defend that, Digger”.

Yeah, too bad that's not going to happen.

Butler’s fantastic overratedness really bugs me.

I think they are a lot like us last year

Rated a little too high, but setting things up for a great team next year.

Texas/Texas Tech

Will Purdue game be joined in progress by ESPN or will they delay the tip by a few minutes? Hopefully it only takes a few extra minutes

by ElijahJones22 on Feb 20, 2010 3:33 PM EST reply actions

Tip is usually schedule

for about 7 minutes after the hour or so. Hopefully the UT/Tech game will finish up by then.

If not, the game will be available on espn360.com but that only works with certain internet service providers. I know it works with Comcast (the only thing Comcast has ever done to make me happy) but doesn’t work with Time Warner.

by dbaltman on Feb 20, 2010 3:51 PM EST up reply actions

360 it is.

Hoping my crappy internet service holds up for a few minutes and hoping that Texas/Tech doesn’t go to OT

I can't believe rather going straight to the game

They show maryland gt highlights. Screw EsPN

Lord, beer me strength.

by doublegoldandblack on Feb 20, 2010 4:17 PM EST reply actions

Not many good looks..

We are settling for shots too early… contributing to the cold start.

by PKBoiler on Feb 20, 2010 4:21 PM EST up reply actions

No one really wants to shoot

JJ looked to kick that rebound out rather than shoot.

Lord, beer me strength.

by doublegoldandblack on Feb 20, 2010 4:22 PM EST reply actions

I think

he wanted to hit Smooge under the basket, but couldn’t get it to him. By the time he realize that was taken away, he had to kick it back out.

by dbaltman on Feb 20, 2010 4:23 PM EST up reply actions

I've never liked that call

Just because the offensive player falls down doesn’t make it a foul

Lord, beer me strength.

by doublegoldandblack on Feb 20, 2010 4:23 PM EST reply actions

Refs

Lot of foul calls early…which team will adjust first

by ElijahJones22 on Feb 20, 2010 4:27 PM EST reply actions

Hummel has figured it out

Drive until you get contact, then fire it up.

Nice shot by Hart

That thing looked like it was going to bank off the shot clock.

by dbaltman on Feb 20, 2010 4:31 PM EST reply actions

Oh yea

i don’t know what the Illini ever did to him

by triallen on Feb 20, 2010 4:32 PM EST up reply actions

Payback

For the scorer who didn’t put him in the book.

by dbaltman on Feb 20, 2010 4:33 PM EST up reply actions

Great denial by JJ

followed by an offensive board and assist

Lord, beer me strength.

Barlow

He is very good on the glass!

When you have a 9 foot wingspan.

We've been sloppy

And we’re still up 2. I’ll take it.

KG...

Do we get OSU game Keaton today?

by tiptonian on Feb 20, 2010 4:42 PM EST reply actions

Doesn't look like a high scoring affair

If we get 8 from him, we should be in good shape

Lord, beer me strength.

by doublegoldandblack on Feb 20, 2010 4:44 PM EST up reply actions

I was hoping he may have woke up and realized his potential

by tiptonian on Feb 20, 2010 4:45 PM EST up reply actions

Ryne Smith sighting

Those have been pretty rare in the winning streak.

by dbaltman on Feb 20, 2010 4:45 PM EST reply actions

I would certainly think so

Webber is the guy who gave Painter his first job at Southern Illinois.

by dbaltman on Feb 20, 2010 4:47 PM EST up reply actions

I knew that much,

I just didn’t know if the goodwill carried over to the present

by tiptonian on Feb 20, 2010 4:48 PM EST up reply actions

I don't think Bruce has ever been real fond of Purdue

since they wouldn’t guarantee him the head coach position after Keady

by triallen on Feb 20, 2010 4:50 PM EST up reply actions

The offense is just miserable without Moore

the spacing is garbage- 3 guys at the foul line

Lord, beer me strength.

by doublegoldandblack on Feb 20, 2010 4:47 PM EST reply actions

JJ has to start getting the ball down low

We’re not going to get by on our shooting

Lord, beer me strength.

by doublegoldandblack on Feb 20, 2010 4:52 PM EST reply actions

Refs

Think they feel stupid not calling anything and then they need a time out because the kid is bleeding?

by ElijahJones22 on Feb 20, 2010 4:52 PM EST reply actions

I sure hope so

I look forward to the makeup call

Lord, beer me strength.

by doublegoldandblack on Feb 20, 2010 4:53 PM EST up reply actions

JJ

Did we forget how to run our offense?

by PKBoiler on Feb 20, 2010 4:53 PM EST reply actions

Defense

Amazing the difference between Keller and Kramer on the ball…

Keller looked like he was blatantly hacking Hummel..

Kramer looked kept his hands off him and swarmed him..

by PKBoiler on Feb 20, 2010 4:57 PM EST reply actions

Robbie's off

2-11 from the field so far, a lot of those misses in the lane

by BoilerPhil on Feb 20, 2010 4:58 PM EST reply actions

Sorry Bruce

you’re not guaranteed a timeout exactly when you call it

by triallen on Feb 20, 2010 4:58 PM EST reply actions

Seriously

I’m not asking much, just knock down the bunnies.

Lord, beer me strength.

by doublegoldandblack on Feb 20, 2010 5:00 PM EST reply actions

Just a bad effort by JJ on that dunk. He was a half step too far out

by BoilerPhil on Feb 20, 2010 5:01 PM EST reply actions

Shameful shooting.

One would think that the Law of Averages would kick in and save our butt in the second half.

by RySenkari on Feb 20, 2010 5:03 PM EST reply actions

shot terribly

but only down 3. There’s no way we can shoot that badly in the2nd half, I’d think.

by boilerg on Feb 20, 2010 5:04 PM EST reply actions

How many misses did they have in the paint? Hit half of those and up 5-7 at the break

by BoilerPhil on Feb 20, 2010 5:06 PM EST up reply actions

The shooting numbers

Illini: fg 50%, 3 pt 62.5%
Purdue: fg 27.3%, 3 pt 33%

Lord, beer me strength.

by doublegoldandblack on Feb 20, 2010 5:06 PM EST reply actions

yikes

but i think i’ll take being close with those numbers. I’m feeling pretty confident, but we need to do a much better job in the 2nd half (stating the obvious), cant afford to lose at home at this time of year.

by boilerg on Feb 20, 2010 5:10 PM EST up reply actions

KG has any many points as JJ

and Hart is outscoring Moore. We need some rhythm on offense and it starts with getting the ball down low to JJ. He looks scared to go down on the block.

Lord, beer me strength.

Polls

We will at least jump up to #3, maybe #2 depending on what happens to UK in a strange gym @ Vandy.

Its a bizarre setup

I’ve got to think it can be tough to shoot in as there have to be strange angles behind the backboard.

Well, let's not play Illinois in Indy now

Since we got the sweep recent history says we lose

True

but what top tier team do you want to play in the tourney the most because i don’t think we’ll just get the walkovers?

by boilerg on Feb 20, 2010 6:21 PM EST up reply actions

Illi shooting

50% from the floor, and 50% from 3. Yowza

To get the 1 seed

do we really have to win the tourney?

by tiptonian on Feb 20, 2010 6:20 PM EST reply actions

Just one game

If we win the regular season title and don’t flame out in the first round I think we’re good. A regular season title and Finals appearance is even better

Hopefully JJ takes an extra hot shower to get all the funk off

and Keaton- no bathing or laundry for the next two months. Whatever you did pregame today, don’t change it.

Lord, beer me strength.

Yay, victory.

Best atmosphere at Mackey so far this year. Nice to see even the old people standing for the last 5 minutes.

Next weekend should be fun.

Good win guys,

I am very happy to know that Kramer and Grant are graduating and Moore might make the jump after this year.

That said, please go to the Final Four.

Peace

If the Big 10 is slow and plodding

The SEC is playing pre-shot clock basketball, at least based on UK/Vandy.

Seriously.

Vandy had a great look to tie that one up. Nice block by wonder-boy Wall on the previous three-pointer, though.

by rcpratt on Feb 20, 2010 8:30 PM EST up reply actions

Calipari was absolutely right when he said he coaches a team of children

Wall and Cousins are both little children. Tremendous talents, but the me first attitudes of 7 year olds. Cousins lost his cool at least twice in the second half and Wall turned to the crowd after the game and started mouthing off.

On a different note, what the hell is Gameday doing in Washington? I thought the Pac-10 was just going to send one team to the tournament and let everyone else go home early.

Lord, beer me strength.
