Syracuse/UCONN

Is anyone out there still awake for this? As of this writing, we are in the 5th overtime and the 'Cuse looks intent on forcing a 6th.  This has gone on so late that  I live on the West coast and my dog has now decided that it was time to go to bed.

Syracuse clearly needs a layup coach.  I should send it my resume.  Back in middle school I was money from either side.

2 More Thoughts

Does Jim Calhoun realize that you are allowed to take a timeout in the last seconds of a tie game? UCONN forced up so many bad shots in a tie game at the end of a period you have to wonder why Calhoun thought it was a good idea to let his guys dribble into the 2-3 zone as time wound down in each period.

Damn, there just had to be a Purdue tie-in. Apparently we lost to Minnesota in 6 OT’s in 1955.

Finally (I know this is 3 thoughts, not 2), but Sean MacDonaugh (sp?) did a hell of a job calling this game. I don’t know if it is physically possibly, but he needs to found a way to start main-lining throat lozenges.

Saw this on sportscenter this morning

Just crazy. I covered a high school game earlier this year that went five overtimes, but since there is no shot clock one team just held for the last shot in the first three. That’s what makes this more incredible.

My grandmother is also an alumnus of a high school that no longer exists, but in one of its final years of existence they played a 9 overtime game in the state tournament. They won and actually had to come back and play later that night. It is still a stat record 45 years later.

A futile crusade to prevent mass ignorance

Never seen a basketball game like it

About the only thing that compares that I’ve seen was a high school hockey semifinal in 1996. Apple Valley and Duluth East went 5OT in the second semifinal, with both goalies making ridiculous save after ridiculous save. Apple Valley needed a late goal to tie it at 4 and force OT, but it took four full overtimes plus a couple minutes of the fifth to get another. The game ended at 1:40 am … and both teams came back and won the next day (Apple Valley in the final, Duluth East in the third-place game).
