Im sorry but this is absolutely ridiculous, there is no way we should ever cut ties with a company like Nike. Do you see other top tier programs like USC, Florida, Ohio St, Texas, etc. the list goes on even comprehending this. Give me a break

One pretty respectable school agrees with us......
Currently at issue between the University of Wisconsin and Nike is a breach in labor codes the university agrees to with companies manufacturing UW goods. By refusing to pay $2.1 million in severance money to workers in two Honduran factories, Nike begged Chancellor Biddy Martin to write a letter demanding the company pay its workers, and yet, as of today, Nike has neither shelled out the money nor given Ms. Martin a proper, personal response. By failing to reply, Nike has shown it either 1) doesn’t care about its workers 2) doesn’t fear UW or 3) can’t read. Knowing Chairman of Nike Phil Knight, it’d be hard to doubt any of the three.

Oh, and students at USC have been trying to get it on the table for years...
For the past 8 years, students at USC have been campaigning to get their university to take a stand in support of the workers producing their apparel. After nearly a decade, not only has USC not taken action, but the president of the university still refuses to even meet with students.

And, as the article states, it's not exactly a new stance for Purdue...
In February, Purdue severed ties with apparel maker Russell for reasons university officials said appeared to be anti-union activities at Honduras factories.

They went through the same chest pounding, grandstanding when I was at Purdue, and that was ten years ago. If you won’t work with textile manufacturers with shady operations then where are you going to get your clothes?

by DocBoiler on Dec 5, 2009 7:01 AM EST reply actions

Anyway we slice it or dice it, the fact is that Nike and other apparel makers all sign contracts with Purdue where they commit to codes of conduct. This is the REAL world. If Nike fails to hold up their end of the bargain, then Purdue should tell them bye-bye. Thats how real organizations work.

by general_purdue on Dec 5, 2009 5:15 PM EST reply actions

The fact remains that Purdue and Nike had a contract and Nike violated the contract. Therefore, Purdue should terminate the contract because Nike isn’t following the terms of the contract.

by Boiler_Up on Dec 5, 2009 5:59 PM EST reply actions

SIGN A CONTRACT=UPHOLDING A CONTRACT

Why is difficult to understand that upholding a contract is a legal obligation that Nike and Purdue must adhere to?! Nike breached the contract, and Purdue needs to terminate the contract.

I agree with the last 3 posts....

…but I gotta ask. You all 3 signed up y’day and this was all your first comment. Were you tipped off to this story or link somehow?

Just seems weird you all 3 say basically the same thing and signed up to H&R on the same day.
